I have just got back from a couple of days installing a commemorative gate near Banbury, nice spot to work and nice work to be doing.

The carving was done by another chap, I am not normally a fan of carving but thought this was quite nice.

and this is what it replaced.

Wow that's amazing, it looks like something from a fairytale story it's soooo beautiful. Very impressed Robin, I wish I could walk through that on my travels.

It's fantastical

How sad is it going to be when we haven't got people with the skills and imagination to pull something like this off ! Will this be going on a public site Robin as would like to link to it from BGI Facebook page :D

That is really beautiful, and as has been said - such a vast improvement on what was there before, and will no doubt stay looking beautiful as it ages and blends with the nature around it.

It is on a public footpath in Epwell near Banbury.

I am much inspired by medieval workmanship as was Tolkien so am happy with comparisons with the shire. :D

The perfect gate to pause at and recite this:

Quote:
The Road Goes Ever On

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

-- J R R Tolkien

That's one fine gate , and lovely carving.
I made my front gate from scrap wood found in skips, mortice and tenon joints, glued and dowelled, looks good, but I like yours better.

Very nice, if the council put these up along the plantation it would get burned by young drinkers unfortunately. I would love that to be the first thing people see when they come to my house, one hell of a first impression! :wnw:
